Despite the many meanings of the term "myth" and the diversity of its definitions, "it is usually assumed that a myth is a story, an invention, a fantasy" [2, p. 13], that is, an inadequate reflection of reality. Myths arise when there is either a deficit of information or a surplus, when someone is interested in concealing the truth and replacing it with falsehood. Anything can be the object of a myth, from the neighbor's salary to the future of an (...) individual country, but usually it is something important for the bulk of society. Social structures, not only secret but also fully "open" ones such as science, can be overgrown with myths. (shrink)

A significant characteristic of science today is the extensive utilization of the concept of "probability." Originally it arose in applied fields and was not employed in fundamental research. However, with the development of quantum and statistical physics in the course of the 20th century, the mathematical apparatus of probability theory was widely used in the study of phenomena that obviously could not be studied without it. Thus, it became clear that probability plays a significant role in a scientific world view. (...) Whereas previously it had been regarded merely as a sad consequence of the temporary incompleteness of our knowledge, the time has now come when probability must take its place in the description of the objective regularities of nature. We argue for an example of based on Diamond and Carey's (1986) work on expertise and recognition, which is not made use of in The Origin of Concepts. This mechanism for perceptual learning seems to have all the necessary characteristics in that it is innate, domain-specific (requires stimulus sets possessing a certain structure), and demonstrably affects categorisation in a way that strongly suggests it will influence concept formation as well.

Internal Set Theory is an axiomatic approach to nonstandard analysis, consisting of three axiom schemes, Transfer , Idealization , and Standardization . We show that the range of application of these axiom schemes may be enlarged with respect to the original formulation. Not only more kinds of formulas are allowed, but also different settings.
